We reviewed the effects of elevated ozone (O3), alone and in combination with elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) on primary and secondary metabolites of trees and performance of insect herbivores by means of meta‐analysis. Our database consisted of 63 studies conducted on 22 species of trees and published between 1990 and 2005. Ozone alone had no overall effect on concentrations of carbohydrates or nutrients, whereas in combination with CO2, elevated O3 reduced nutrient concentrations and increased carbohydrate concentrations. In contrast to primary metabolites, concentrations of phenolics and terpenes were significantly increased by 16% and 8%, respectively, in response to elevated O3. Effects of ozone in combination with elevated CO2 were weaker than those of ozone alone on phenolics, but stronger than those of ozone alone on terpenes. The magnitude of secondary metabolite responses depended on the type of ozone exposure facility and increased in the following order: indoor growth chamber 3 than gymnosperms, as shifts in concentrations of carbohydrate and phenolics were observed in the former, but not in the latter. Elevated O3 had positive effects on some indices of insect performance: pupal mass increased and larval development time shortened, but these effects were counteracted by elevated CO2. Therefore, despite the observed increase in secondary metabolites, elevated O3 tends to increase tree foliage quality for herbivores, but elevated CO2 may alleviate these effects. Our meta‐analysis clearly demonstrated that effects of elevated O3 alone on leaf chemistry and some indices of insect performance differed from those of O3+CO2, and therefore, it is important to study effects of several factors of global climate change simultaneously.  相似文献

This paper explores the evolutionary implications of the enormous variability that characterizes populations of RNA viruses and retroviruses. It begins by examining the magnitude of genetic variation in both natural and experimental populations. In natural populations, differences arise even within individual infected patients, with the per-site nucleotide diversity at this level ranging from < 1% to 6%. In laboratory populations, two viruses sampled from the same clone differed by ∼0.7% in their fitness. Three different mechanisms that may be important in maintaining viral genetic variability were tested: (1) Fisher's fundamental theorem, to compare the observed rate of fitness change with the extent of fitness-related variation within the same experimental populations; (2) magnitude of genomic mutation rate, to assess whether it correlated with fitness-related variation, as predicted by the mutation-selection balance hypothesis; (3) frequency-dependent selection, which affords rare genotypes an advantage. The paper concludes with a discussion of two evolutionary consequences of variability: the fixation of deleterious mutations by drift in small populations and the role of clonal interference in large ones.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. The Lejeuneaceae are the largest family of the liverworts (Hepaticae), with almost a thousand species in 91 currently accepted genera. We analysed phylogenetic relationships of 69 genera, representing all major subfamilies and tribes recognized in the family, by using 49 informative morphological characters (31 gametophytic, 18 sporophytic), one chemical character, and applying equal and successive weighting of characters and parsimony analysis. In all trees recovered, the Lejeuneaceae were monophyletic with Nipponolejeunea (subfam. Nipponolejeuneoideae) forming the basalmost lineage. The remaining genera clustered in two major groups, the monophyletic Lejeuneoideae (52 genera) and the paraphyletic Ptychanthoideae (16 genera). Within each, several multigeneric lineages corresponding in part to previously described taxa were recovered: the Acrolejeuneinae and Ptychanthinae clades in the Ptychanthoideae, and the Brachiolejeuneinae, Lejeuneeae and Tuyamaella–Cololejeunea clades in the Lejeuneoideae. Bryopteris , a genus sometimes treated as a separate family, was nested in the Ptychanthinae clade. The Tuyamaella–Cololejeunea lineage corresponded with three previously recognized subfamilies (Cololejeuneoideae, Myriocoleoideae and Tuyamaelloideae) and contained genera with neotenic features, in two subclades. These features seemed to have originated by multiple heterochronic events: single origins were detected for 'protonemal neoteny' and 'primary neoteny', whereas 'secondary neoteny' probably evolved twice. Relationships within the large Lejeuneeae clade (43 genera) remained largely unresolved, although several putative lineages were detected in majority rule trees. Nuclear DNA contents were determined by flow cytometry for 20 populations of the perennial C4 shrub Atriplex halimus L. (Chenopodiaceae) originating from the Mediterranean basin and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). Two populations were also analysed for chromosome number: one (from Ibiza, Spain), with a 2C nuclear DNA content of 2.40 pg, was shown to be diploid (2 n  = 2 x  = 18), whilst the other (from Sicily, Italy), with 5.11 pg, was tetraploid (2 n  = 2 x  = 36). With respect to nuclear DNA content, two groups of populations were detected, diploids with 2.40–2.44 pg and tetraploids with 4.77–5.13 pg. The diploid populations were mainly from the western Mediterranean (Spain and France) and Fuerteventura, whereas tetraploids were generally, but not exclusively, from more arid areas in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. In general, the diploid and tetraploid populations corresponded to the subspecies halimus and schweinfurthii , respectively. For certain populations having morphologies intermediate between those considered typical of these two subspecies, nuclear DNA contents showed them to be tetraploid. Understanding patterns of genetic structure is fundamental for developing successful management programmes for deme‐structured organisms, such as amphibians. We used five microsatellite loci and DNA sequences of the mitochondrial control region to assess the relative influences of landscape (geographic distance, altitude and rivers as corridors for dispersal) and historical factors on patterns of gene flow in populations of the toad Bufo bufo in Central Spain. We sampled 175 individuals from eight populations distributed along two major river drainages and used maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian approaches to infer patterns of gene flow and population structure. The mitochondrial DNA data show closely‐related haplotypes distributed across the Iberian Peninsula with no geographic structuring, suggesting recent differentiation of haplotypes and extensive gene flow between populations. On the other hand, microsatellites provide finer resolution, showing that high altitude populations (> 2000 m) exchange lower numbers of migrants with other populations. The results of Bayesian estimates for recent migration rates in high altitude populations suggest source‐sink dynamics between ponds that are consistent with independent data from monitoring over the past 20 years. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 824–839.  相似文献

Flowering synchrony is essential for plant reproductive success, especially in the case of small‐sized populations of self‐incompatible species. Closely related to synchrony, flowering intensity influences pollinator attraction and pollinator movements. Thus, a high flowering intensity may increase pollinator attraction but, at the same time, may also increase the probability of geitonogamous pollinations. Depending on the mating system, the female fitness of plants in small populations may be affected by both the positive effects of higher flowering synchrony and pollinator attraction and the negative effects of geitonogamous pollinations induced by a high flowering intensity. It was hypothesized that different‐sized plants in a population would show contrasting flowering patterns, resulting in differences in pollinator behaviour. These influences could result in differences in mating and female reproductive success. This hypothesis was tested by studying the flowering pattern of Erodium paularense (Geraniaceae), a rare and endangered endemic of central Spain. The temporal distribution of flower production was explored throughout the reproductive season, and the probability of xenogamy and geitonogamy and their relationship to plant size and fitness components were calculated. The analysis of this partially self‐compatible species showed diverse flowering patterns related to different plant sizes. Small plants produced a larger number of seeds per fruit in spite of having lower values of flowering synchrony. By contrast, large plants produced a larger number of seeds from geitonogamous pollinations. The effect of different flower displays and outcrossing rates on seed set varied throughout the season in the different groups. The ultrastructure of testa seed in the genus Neotinea (Orchidaceae, Orchidinae) was examined for the first time. The morphology of the seed and of the anticlinal and periclinal walls was analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Quantitative data concerning the length and width of the seed and embryo, seed and embryo volume, free air space, and number of cells along the longitudinal axis are presented. In all species, the seeds are fusiform in shape with transverse ridges on the inner periclinal walls. This ornamentation pattern is characteristic for the genus Neotinea . Although a wealth of information is available on the induction of one or several drought‐related responses in different species, little is known of how their timing, modulation and crucially integration influence drought tolerance. Based upon metabolomic changes in oat (Avena sativa L.), we have defined key processes involved in drought tolerance. During a time course of increasing water deficit, metabolites from leaf samples were profiled using direct infusion–electrospray mass spectroscopy (DI‐ESI‐MS) and high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) ESI‐MS/MS and analysed using principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis (DFA). The involvement of metabolite pathways was confirmed through targeted assays of key metabolites and physiological experiments. We demonstrate an early accumulation of salicylic acid (SA) influencing stomatal opening, photorespiration and antioxidant defences before any change in the relative water content. These changes are likely to maintain plant water status, with any photoinhibitory effect being counteracted by an efficient antioxidant capacity, thereby representing an integrated mechanism of drought tolerance in oats. We also discuss these changes in relation to those engaged at later points, consequence of the different water status in susceptible and resistant genotypes.  相似文献
